Communication is the key in human relationships. In order to improve. If we want to improve our interpersonal relationships, that’s where we should begin.
This exercise can help you find the true meaning of communication, listening and understanding. Remember that listening doesn’t necessarily mean agreeing.
- Choose a colleague, friend or relative, sit close by so that you are comfortable and try to maintain eye contact.
- Choose a neutral topic of conversation, such as “how was your work day” or “what happened during the weekend” and be articulate.
- Request you interlocutor makes some clarifying questions based on what you said. E.g. “When you said….. did you mean……….?”
- When you are in agreement put down 1 point. When you are in disagreement try to explain what has not been clearly understood.
- When you’ve won 3 points, diverse roles and repeat the exercise.

Remember: Communication is often a challenging process. Many times, what we communicate is received by the interlocutor in a different way and vice versa. If that occurred during the exercise try to discuss it further with your interlocutor.
