Why leave for tomorrow what you can do today?

Όταν έχεις να ανέβεις ένα βουνό, μη νομίζεις ότι θα γίνει μικρότερο αν περιμένεις.

All of us at some point, consciously choose to leave something for later, although we have the choice to do it immediately.

Certainly, such behavior does not bring about disaster, but it can significantly affect the quality of our lives, especially when it comes to urgent and important issues. However, it is vital to understand the reasons that perpetuate this ''habit'', as only then can we get rid of it.

As odd as it sounds, the bases of procrastination can be the fear of failure and the fear of success. In the first case, by fearing the negative outcome of a situation we choose inertia and sustain our comfort zone. In the second, believing that success is accompanied with higher expectations and demands from others around us and ourselves in which we doubt we can respond, leads us to avoiding to take action.

In addition, homeostasis makes us feel secure. Things are predictable and this creates a familiarity that we do not want to risk. For example, one can postpone the ending of a relationship because it requires adaptation to new norm.

In a closing note, procrastination may be due to a mood disorder. This is also evident in people with depressive symptoms that they have difficulty making decisions and taking action, due to low energy reserves, lack of self-confidence etc.
