Problem solving is a process that can help you find solutions to troubling matters and slowly gain autonomy. Before proceeding to solving your problems, however, you must first define the problem specifically.
Problem solving phases
- production of possible solutions: Think of many different solutions.
- pros and cons evaluation: Make two columns with the pros and cons of each situation.
- rehearsal: Play in your mind the solution you decide upon, step by step, in order to spot possible traps or pros and cons you hadn't previously considered.
- role playing and diverse role playing: Role playing with people you trust helps you test the implementation of a solution. In this way you can spot possible difficulties or some skills that need improvement in a particular area, that can be overcome through diverse role-playing, where are your friend can point out possible different solutions.
- activities planning: This phase is important when efficient time in activity planning is needed in order to achieve a goal.
- dysfunctional thoughts management: Dysfunctional thinking patterns can cause difficulty in problem solving. Dysfunctional thoughts should be challenged and changed.
- consequential control: The set of some positive consequences that will follow the solution's implementation. E.g. " if I manage to talk to them about my problem, I will take my best friend for dinner to celebrate".
